(WNY News Now) – The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation (OSI) has launched an investigation into the death of Mark Bemis, who was killed during a law enforcement encounter in Chautauqua County on June 18, 2025.

According to preliminary reports, Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a 911 call reporting a domestic incident at a residence in the Town of Mina. Upon arrival, deputies encountered Bemis standing outside near an open garage, reportedly holding a long gun. A gunfire exchange occurred between Bemis and the deputies, during which Bemis was struck and later pronounced dead. A shotgun was recovered at the scene.

Under New York Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI is mandated to investigate incidents where a police officer may have caused a civilian’s death, regardless of whether the individual was armed or in custody at the time. The law applies to both on-duty and off-duty officers.

OSI stated that the investigation remains in its early stages and that all facts are subject to change as additional information becomes available.
