(WNY News Now) – Residents are being urged to ignore fraudulent text messages falsely claiming traffic violations and threatening license suspension.
LITTLE VALLEY, NY – The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public to a new scam targeting local residents through fraudulent text messages.
According to a press release, at approximately 2:00 p.m., community members have reported receiving texts claiming to be a “final notice” for an outstanding traffic ticket. The message warns recipients that their driving privileges and vehicle registration are at risk of suspension unless immediate payment is made.
Authorities have confirmed that these messages are scams designed to trick individuals into providing personal and payment information through a fake website. The Cattaraugus County Department of Motor Vehicles has verified that no such notices are being issued by their office and that the messages are not legitimate.
“These are generalized messages being sent randomly,” the Sheriff’s Office stated. “They are attempts to coax individuals into entering payment information into a fraudulent website.”
Residents are strongly advised not to click on any links or share any personal information if they receive such messages. The Sheriff’s Office emphasizes that legitimate traffic violations and DMV communications are not handled through unsolicited text messages.
