Authorities say suspect took keys from apartment before fleeing state and wrecking vehicle
(WNY News Now) – ELLICOTT, N.Y. — A 36-year-old Ellicott man has been charged in connection with the unauthorized use of a motor vehicle that was later crashed in Cleveland, Ohio, according to the Town of Ellicott Police Department.
On April 28, 2025, Dustin D. Pickett was arrested and charged with Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Burglary in the Second Degree, Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, and Petit Larceny.
Police allege Pickett reached through the open doorway of a victim’s apartment and removed vehicle keys from the wall without permission. He then reportedly took the vehicle and drove out of state, ultimately crashing it several hours later in Cleveland.
Following the crash, Pickett returned to Chautauqua County, where he was taken into custody by Ellicott police.
Pickett is scheduled to appear in the Town of Ellicott Court at a later date to answer the charges. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
