(WNY News Now) – JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – A Jamestown man was taken into custody Tuesday morning after officers responded to a report of a suspicious situation on the city’s west side.

According to the Jamestown Police Department, officers from the first platoon were dispatched around 9:56 a.m. on October 21, 2025, after receiving a call about suspicious activity. An investigation determined that 42-year-old Christopher W. Smith, a Jamestown resident, had attempted to steal an e-bike from the location and caused property damage in the process.

Smith was located a short distance from the scene and taken into custody without incident. He was transported to the Jamestown City Jail, where he was charged with Attempted Petit Larceny, Criminal Mischief in the Fourth Degree, Criminal Tampering in the Third Degree, and Possession of Burglar’s Tools.

Police also discovered that Smith had an outstanding arrest warrant out of the City of Jamestown. He is being held pending arraignment in Jamestown City Court. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
