(WNY News Now) – A Dunkirk man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported burglary in progress in the Town of Dunkirk, according to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responded to Shorewood Drive on December 23, 2025, at approximately 2:51 p.m. for a report of a burglary in progress. Following an investigation at the scene, authorities determined that a male suspect had entered a building without permission.
Michael E. Hamernik, 50, of Dunkirk, was taken into custody and charged with burglary in the third degree. Investigators allege that Hamernik unlawfully entered the building, leading to the arrest.
After his arrest, Hamernik was transported to the Chautauqua County Jail for centralized arraignment processing. He is expected to answer the charge in Dunkirk Town Court at a later date.
No injuries were reported in connection with the incident. The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities note that all charges are accusations, with the defendant presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
