(WNY News Now) – DUNKIRK, NY — A 34-year-old Dunkirk man was charged Sunday night after police say he was seen swinging a machete at passersby on Main Street.

According to the Dunkirk Police Department, officers on the 3–11 p.m. shift responded around 8:22 p.m. on March 1, 2026, to reports of a man wielding a large machete near the 300 block of Main Street.

Police said callers reported the man was “wildly swinging” the weapon at individuals in the area.

Upon arrival, officers observed a suspect, later identified as Jonathan Gonzalez-Colon, 34, of Dunkirk, allegedly walking down the street while actively swinging a machete. Authorities said Gonzalez-Colon refused repeated commands to drop the weapon.

During the arrest, police allege that Gonzalez-Colon spit in the face of an officer while being taken into custody.

Gonzalez-Colon was transported to Dunkirk Police Headquarters for processing. He was charged with:

  • Reckless Endangerment in the Second Degree (PL 120.20)
  • Disorderly Conduct (PL 240.20)
  • Harassment in the Second Degree (PL 240.26)

Police said he was released with appearance tickets and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
