(WNY News Now) – A 69-year-old Albion resident has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison after being convicted of receiving child sexual abuse material (CSAM), federal prosecutors announced.
BUFFALO, N.Y. — U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced that Norman Kelly, 69, of Albion, New York, was sentenced to 144 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo following his conviction for receipt of child sexual abuse material.
According to prosecutors, the investigation began on October 20, 2023, when Kelly arrived at Detroit Metropolitan Airport in Romulus, Michigan, on a flight from Incheon, South Korea. During a customs inspection, officers noted inconsistencies in his travel account, lack of eye contact, and nervous behavior.
Kelly was found carrying a cellular phone, a laptop computer, and four USB storage devices. A preliminary search of the electronic devices by Customs and Border Protection officers revealed suspected child sexual abuse material, prompting further investigation.
Authorities later determined that between March 12 and September 20, 2023, Kelly used his laptop to communicate online with minors and persuade them to engage in sexually explicit conduct. The material was then transmitted to him via the internet.
Investigators identified multiple instances of illegal content received during that period. This included an explicit image involving a pre-teen child and a video involving an infant. A forensic review ultimately found that Kelly possessed approximately 475 image files and 377 video files depicting child sexual abuse, some of which included violent content.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Maeve E. Huggins. Officials stated the sentencing is the result of a joint investigation conducted by Homeland Security Investigations, led by Special Agent-in-Charge Erin Keegan, with assistance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Homeland Security Investigations personnel in Detroit.
