(WNY News Now) – A Jamestown man was taken into custody early Friday morning after police responded to a welfare check at the Foote Avenue Plaza and allegedly found him impaired by drugs while behind the wheel of a vehicle.

According to the Jamestown Police Department, officers from the Third Platoon responded to a business in the Foote Avenue Plaza at approximately 12:51 a.m. on May 22, 2026, after receiving a report of a man slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle in the parking lot.

Upon arrival, officers identified the driver as 40-year-old Erick D. Gifford.

Police said an investigation determined that Gifford had allegedly been operating the vehicle while impaired by drugs. He was taken into custody and transported to the Jamestown Police Department.

Gifford was charged with Driving While Ability Impaired by Drugs (DWAI-Drugs). He was later held pending arraignment in Jamestown City Court. As are all persons accused of a crime, the accused is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
