(WNY News Now) – MAYVILLE, N.Y. — Chautauqua County District Attorney Jason Schmidt announced Thursday that a Jamestown man was sentenced to 15 years in state prison in connection with the death of a 16-month-old child.
Matthew Nuttall, 28, of Jamestown, was sentenced by Judge David Foley to 15 years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision after being convicted of Manslaughter in the First Degree in the death of 16-month-old Isaac Benton.

According to the Chautauqua County District Attorney’s Office, the sentence was imposed following a plea agreement reached during the final pre-trial conference before jury selection was scheduled to begin. Under the agreement, Nuttall pleaded guilty to the top charge in the indictment, Manslaughter in the First Degree, and Judge Foley agreed to cap the prison sentence at 15 years.
District Attorney Schmidt said prosecutors had requested a longer sentence due to the severity of the case. The prosecution sought a 20-year prison term on behalf of the People of the State of New York.
No additional details regarding the circumstances surrounding the child’s death were released in the sentencing announcement.
