(WNY News Now) – Firefighters battled a structure fire early Tuesday at 629 Prendergast Ave. in Jamestown, with fire extending from the exterior into the building’s attic.

The Jamestown Fire Department was dispatched at about 2:10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 25, for a reported structure fire at 629 Prendergast Ave. The building is owned by Canyon Corp.

Firefighters arrived to find heavy fire on the front of the building. The fire had extended through the stud channels and along the exterior, with one nearby exposure on the B side of the structure.

Two engine companies, one ladder company and a chief officer responded, with 11 firefighters assigned to the incident. Seven off-duty firefighters also responded to assist.

Crews initially knocked down much of the fire from outside the building. Fire had extended into the attic, where firefighters encountered high heat while attempting to gain access.

The operation was eventually shifted to a defensive strategy. Firefighters used the master stream from Ladder 1 to continue extinguishing the fire. One crew remained at the scene for fire watch after the main firefighting operation ended.

The Jamestown Police Department, Board of Public Utilities, Department of Development, ALSTAR and city Department of Public Works assisted at the scene. The Red Cross and National Fuel were also involved.

The Department of Development remained at the scene after fire crews cleared.

The Jamestown Fire Department reported that the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Firefighters returned to service at approximately 7:30 a.m.
