NEW YORK – New drivers in New York State have an easier path to hitting the roadways than do drivers in a majority of other states, according to a new study by Siegried and Jensen.
Drivers in New York only need to pass the knowledge test by 70 percent, which is the lowest standard in the country. In addition, the New York driver test has 10 elements involved compared to a nation-high 19 in Washington state.
While passing a driver’s test in New York is relatively easier than in other states, it certainly isn’t less expensive, the study found. The cost to pass a driver’s test in New York is $20, the 10th highest in the country. Most expensive is Washington state at $85 for the test.
The information gathered is based on the official driver handbook (or equivalent) issued by the Department for Motor Vehicles in each state, websites of the Department for Motor Vehicles in each state and information on driver testing from comparison websites Driving-Tests.org and DMV.org.
