WESTERN NEW YORK – Friday is the unofficial start of the summer travel season; and what better way to celebrate than make a day out of it than with a new holiday?

Created just this year by US Travel Center Giant Pilot Flying J, ‘National Road Trip Day’ celebrates just that, hitting the road.

AAA says nearly 43 million Americans will start their summers with a Memorial Day Weekend getaway.

Nearly 38 million of them will go on, you guessed it, a road trip. The top Memorial Day travel destination this year according to AAA is Orlando, Florida.

Experts say road trips are popular whether it’s a holiday or not. Travel research firm MMGY reports 51 percent of Americans took at least one road trip in 2018.
