WASHINGTON – Last week President Trump signed an executive order that directed the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to modernize the way the country develops flu vaccines.
The executive order also encourages more people to get vaccinated.
It establishes a task force led by the Department of Defense and Health and Human services to create a more modern and rapid method of production with longer-lasting results.
A senior official says it currently takes the government about six months lead time and 900,000 chicken eggs per day to get the seasonal flu vaccine ready to match the year’s virus.
The official also said if a pandemic flu were to break out, it’s unlikely the united states would be prepared to manage the outbreak with the current system.
