National Read Across America Day

JAMESTOWN – Monday is National Read Across America Day.

According to NationalDayCalendar.com, it is celebrated each year on March 2, which is Doctor Seuss’ Birthday.

However, if the day falls on a weekend, the observance is held on the nearest school day. That’s because the National Education Association’s Read Across America Initiative is meant to encourage reading in children.

The observance was first held in 1998.

Locally, Chautauqua County Executive PJ Wendel is participating in the day by reading The Lorax to students at Westfield Elementary School.
