Jamestown Woman Rescued From Gorge In Rural Chautauqua County

CHAUTAUQUA – A Jamestown woman who became lost while hiking in the Hannum Road Gorge near Mayville on Thursday was rescued by Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Deputies and other first responders.

Deputies report 27-year-old Kathleen Johnston was hiking in a wooded area around 9:30 p.m. when she lost her way.

Sheriff K-9 Bentley was dispatched to the area to search for the missing woman.





Deputies say Johnston was located by the K-9 in the creek bed of the gorge.

Johnston, deputies say, was unable to walk out on her own. The Erie County Sheriff’s Office Air unit was called to the scene to extricate Johnston. However, deputies say the air unit was unable to land in the gorge.

The Chautauqua County Technical Rescue Team was dispatched to assist deputies rescue Johnston. First responders were able to extricate Johnston from the rocky terrain.





















Deputies say Johnston was treated by fire personnel for minor injuries but should be okay.

The New York State Forest Rangers, Mayville Fire Department and Chautauqua Fire Department also assisted on scene with the rescue.
