POLAND – A suspect believed to be wanted out of Canada has been arrested following a vehicle pursuit on I-86.

New York State Police tell WNYNewsNow the chase started just before the I-86 bridge over Chautauqua Lake around 1:30 p.m. when troopers attempted to pull over a speeding stolen vehicle.

The pursuit continued east until the Jeep Grand Cherokee broke down just past the Kennedy exit. Police believe apparent oil pan damage ended the chase.

Troopers say a male, later identified as William Stevens, 34, allegedly displayed a knife at police as they were attempting to take him in to custody. Stevens was however arrested without further incident.

Through investigation, police believe that Stevens entered the county via the U.S. Michigan boarder and allegedly stole the vehicle from Port Huron, Michigan.

Charges are pending as police continue their investigation.

Troopers were assisted by Ellicott Police and Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Department.
