MAYVILLE – The woman vying to be Chautauqua County’s next Democratic Election Commissioner is one step closer to being appointed to the seat.

This week, the Legislature’s Administrative Services Committee approved a resolution allowing Luz Torres’ appointment to be voted on next week by the full lawmaking body.

Torres, who is the current deputy commissioner, would be the first Hispanic woman to hold the position.

The Dunkirk native says if appointed to the spot she would make putting voters first her priority.

She would replace Election Commissioner Norm Green is stepping down at the end of his term of office. Green has held the position since 1999.

The full legislature is expected to vote on the appointment during next Wednesday’s meeting.
