MAYVILLE – Chautauqua County’s legislature has approved a new Democratic Elections Commissioner.

Lawmakers approved Loren Kent for the job by a vote of 16 to 3 during their monthly meeting on Wednesday night.

However, the appointment is not set in stone yet, pending the outcome of a lawsuit.

Outgoing Democratic Elections Commissioner Norm Green filed suit after his recommendation, Luz Torres, was blocked by the lawmaking body last year.

Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Nazzaro says the case is slated to go before the court next month.

“Once that is heard, the Democratic Caucus will be making a public statement outlining all of our rational and reasoning for bringing this resolution forward,” said Nazzaro. “At this time, I encourage my colleagues to vote for this and let the courts decide in April.”

The three lawmakers who voted no, Republican Legislators John Hemmer, Bob Scudder, Bill Ward, say they weren’t supporting one candidate over the other.
