JAMESTOWN – High school wrestling will soon get underway in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus Counties.
Section VI Athletics announced the wrestling season will begin May 3 in Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, Niagara and Orleans counties.
The wrestling season will now run through the end of June, along with baseball, softball, tennis, lacrosse and track.
However, the sport will remain on hold in Erie County after the Department of Health recommended in January that school districts postpone or cancel wrestling activities this season, based on high levels of community transmission and because wrestlers won’t be able to wear a mask while competing.
Section VI said the county reaffirmed that stance earlier this month.
A limited number of spectators can attend matches; however, individual schools have the ability to adjust the policy if they don’t have room to safely host spectators.
Nothing says “I believe in the severity of Covid-19” like letting wrestling start up.
