JAMESTOWN – The groundbreaking of a new community skatepark in Jamestown is happening next week.

The new skatepark, at 117 Fairmount Ave., will be located along the city’s Riverwalk.

A preview of the possible design was discussed at last week’s planning commission meeting.

Lead Designer Micah Shapiro says the site will incorporate some of the area’s manufacturing history.

“The existing site has these large foundations that were part of a trolly factory, we are going to incorporate those into the design,” explained Shapiro. “Also, there was a bridge that was taken down somewhere in Jamestown, but there are these girder pieces so we going to incorporate into the design as well.”

It will cost $550,000 to bring the idea to life, with funding covered from grants via the SkatePark Project and Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation.

The groundbreaking will take place next Thursday afternoon. A future addition to the park is also possible.
