NEW YORK STATE (WENY) – The American Red Cross said Monday it is facing an “emergency blood and platelet shortage”, with inventory numbers reaching the lowest post-summer level since 2015.

Donors of all blood types, especially Type O, and platelet donors are urged to make an appointment to give now in order to meet the needs of patients this fall.

Blood and platelet donations are often used in life-saving medical procedures, such as transfusions.
