PORTLAND – A second set of human remains have been recovered from a trail in Chautauqua County.

Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Jim Quattrone tells WNY News Now the discovery was made as a result of an additional search of the “rails to trail” area near Woleben Road in the Town of Portland.

He says investigators do not know how long the body has been there, but believes the remains are “more recent” than the first discovery on Sunday; which is likely decades old.

Additionally he says both remains are believed to be female and law enforcement are suspecting “foul play.”

The Chautauqua County Forensic Investigation Team is working with the Mercyhurst Forensic Anthropology Department in identifying both set of remains, which could take a week to do.

Quattrone says he doesn’t believe the second body discovered is related to any unsolved cases in the county, but hopes dental records from the first could shed light on one of the many cold cases.

He says the trail will likely remain closed until further notice.
