CLEVELAND – Eighteen people had to be rescued from an ice floe that drifted away on Lake Erie Sunday.

The group had been snowmobiling near Catawba Island, west of Cleveland, when the ice sheet cracked and began drifting from shore.

A good Samaritan with an airboat managed to rescue seven of them.

The Coast Guard was able to save the eleven who remained stuck on the ice floe by using a helicopter and one of their airboats. Fortunately, no one needed medical attention.

The National Weather Service in Cleveland had been warning people to stay off the ice on Lake Erie because this was a possibility.
