ERIE, Pa. (Erie News Now) – A sure sign that spring is on its way is the Erie Zoo reopening for the 2022 season.

People anxiously waited in long line for the gates to open for the free, grand re-opening celebration for the Erie Zoo.

Emily Smicker, the Marketing and Events Coordinator for the Erie Zoo said, “We are just excited about the animals since they are able to see all their visitors again.”

After a long winter both the animals and the zoo staff were excited to have visitors back on the grounds.

Sadie Shaffer was visiting the zoo with her mom and said, “My favorite part is having fun with my family and seeing all the animals cause all the time they get new things.”

Although, the Erie Zoo is welcoming back visitors with the opening weekend, they are also looking forward to warmer weather, so they can continue to work on projects all around the zoo. This comes as they are looking to reapply for accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.

“We are going really hard in prepping our zoo this season, really going above and beyond. We have some new exhibits that we are going to be revealing, some new exhibits that we are going to be renovating and working on”, said Smicker.

As parents and children enjoy the different animals on opening weekend, staff at the zoo are already looking for ways to make it better.

“We are also going to be doing a lot to enhance the visitor experience and make ourselves more accessible to our community”, said Smicker.

While there were lots of smiling faces on Saturday, Erie Zoo officials want to continue making those smiles happen with their new advances and upgrades.

“We are really working towards that next chapter, pushing our zoo forward into the future and making it more sustainable place for our community to enjoy”, said Smicker.
