NEW YORK – New York State’s Lieutenant Governor was arrested Tuesday on federal campaign finance charges.

According to the New York Times, Brian Benjamin surrendered to face a federal bribery conspiracy indictment in connection with a scheme to funnel fraudulent donations to a previous campaign.

The Times reports the legal action is the result of an investigation by the F.B.I. and the U.S. Attorney.

Prosecutors accused Benjamin of conspiring to direct state funds to a Harlem real estate investor in exchange for orchestrating thousands of dollars in illegal campaign contributions to Benjamin’s unsuccessful 2021 campaign for New York City comptroller.

The investor was arrested on federal charges in November.

Benjamin was named Lieutenant Governor last year, after now Governor Kathy Hochul took over for Andrew Cuomo who resigned amid sexual harassment allegations.
