ERIE, Pa. (Erie News Now) – The shortage of formula continues to grow locally and nationally. Now, babies are starting to lack nutrients like Vitamin D and Iron. Dr. Robert Burns with Children’s Community Pediatrics says there haven’t been any babies admitted from lacking nutrients, but if they do, there are tell-tale signs.

“Any fever over 100.3. trouble breathing or wet diapers,” says Burns.

There’s an important nutrient found in breast milk and formula. It’s called H.M.O., and it helps with an infant’s immune system. He sees some parents making formula from scratch or giving their baby goat’s milk, which is not a great idea.
President Biden invokes the Defense Production Act to get the formula out to desperate parents.

‘I’ve directed my team to do everything possible to ensure there’s enough safe baby formula. And that it’s quickly reaching families that need it the most.” Biden says.

Burns recommends all moms grab any baby formula if possible unless he or they are on anything specific. Also, whatever you do, don’t buy online.

“There are some scams out there where the formula you buy is outdated, or the person disappears after you purchase it.”
