Sheriff Jim Quattrone tells WNY News Now contractors digging a septic system for a new house discovered a skull at Country Ayre Farms in Dewittville.

The Sheriff’s Office is working with experts from Mercyhurst Forensic Anthropology Department in determining the age of the remains.

Following a preliminary inspection, Quattrone believes the body could be a half-century-old, or older, and could possibly be part of an unofficial gravesite.

The Meadows Road farm, he explains, was once the County Farm, where immigrants and others worked in the 1800s. What’s known as a “Potters Field” is nearby, where many workers without families were buried.

The Sheriff says while investigators will treat the site as a crime scene for now, he doesn’t initially suspect foul play.
