ERIE, Pa. (Erie News Now) – If you have spent any time on the beaches of Lake Erie lately, you may have likely noticed a big ship canvassing the water.

Erie News Now found out it is NOAA vessel Thomas Jefferson taking detailed pictures of the lake floor.

It has been canvassing the lake for the past week by using high-tech sonar to help mariners understand what is beneath the water.

The Thomas Jefferson typically spends its time in ocean water but is on a much-needed mapping mission of Lake Erie – a job that has not been done since the 1940s.

The NOAA weather office in Cleveland told Erie News Now the ship works 24/7 for two weeks at a time then will head back to port in Cleveland.
