DUNKIRK – Police in Dunkirk are warning about the dangers of toy gun misuse following the arrest of a 17-year-old who shot up a vehicle causing damage.

On Wednesday the Dunkirk Police Department responded to the area of Lake Shore Drive East and Gazelle Street after a teen allegedly shot up a vehicle multiple times using a Splat-R-Ball and/or Orbeez toy gun, causing damage to a rear window.

The toy shoots water gel pellets that are propelled by a spring-loaded air pump mechanism.

The juvenile has since been charged in Family Court. While no injuries were reported in this incident, police are warning about the dangers non-lethal guns pose.

Although the toy guns are not illegal, the Dunkirk Police Department is reminding residents and parents to use these toy guns in a safe manner, and to monitor juveniles.

Police say these projectiles can cause significant damage to property and could potentially cause serious injuries.
