JAMESTOWN, NY (WNY News Now) – A 64-year-old Town of Gerry woman is behind bars after allegedly hitting a person with her vehicle before attacking them with a machete last week.

New York State Police arrested Mary Butler on Thursday following the alleged incident on Route 380.

An investigation revealed that while driving with four minors in her vehicle Butler allegedly swerved to strike a woman walking on the side of the roadway.

Police said she then exited her car and allegedly attacked the victim with the flat side of a machete.

Butler fled the scene and was later arrested at her residence, troopers reported.

She is charged with second-degree assault, second-degree menacing, second-degree reckless endangerment and four counts of endangering the welfare of a child.

The victim, police said, was treated at UPMC Chautauqua Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Butler currently sits in custody at the Chautauqua County Jail with bail set at $35,000.
