WEST ELLICOTT, NY (WNY News Now) – It appears construction crews have begun work to remodel the old West Ellicott K-Mart on Fairmount Avenue.

On Thursday morning, several workers were on hand to fix up the exterior facade of the building, which will be the new home to Chautauqua County first Target Store.

Last fall, a Target spokesperson confirmed the company purchased the 117,000 square foot property.

This will be the first time since August 2019 that a business will operate out of the location after K-Mart closed as part of a nationwide cut back by their parent company Sears.

However, the acquisition has had a bumpy road. Target Corporation filed a lawsuit against the Town of Ellicott Board of Assessors in Chautauqua County Supreme Court back in July.

The company sought a property tax reduction from $3.4 million dollars to $1.7 million dollars.

WNY News Now reached out to Target for comment on the renovations and so far, has not heard back. A construction worker estimated it could take over six months to complete a project of this size.
