LITTLE VALLEY, NY (WNY News Now) – A 43-year-old man in Cattaraugus County was allegedly caught red handed stealing a catalytic converter from a vehicle.

The Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office arrested Salamanca resident Darby Monahan on Monday after investigating a “suspicious person” call on Rock City Street in Little Valley.

Deputies report Monahan had a hand grinder, hacksaw and freshly cut catalytic converter in his possession.

Furthermore, it’s alleged Monahan damaged a second catalytic converter on a box truck he cut the first part from.

Since then, Monahan has been charged with grand larceny and criminal mischief.

Back in October, New York State passed legislation to combat the rise in catalytic converter thefts. The part is made of highly valuable metals, some priced at up to $20,000 per ounce, which had led to increased thefts across the region.
