ALBANY, NY (WENY) – With thanksgiving coming up, New York State is reminding everyone to stay safe while cooking holiday meals.

The Firefighters Association of New York says that the state has already experienced 118 home fire fatalities, compared to 85 at this time last year – an almost 50 percent increase.

So what can you do to protect yourself?

For starters, be careful if you decide to deep fry a turkey because it is dangerous to do so. Officials say that if you still want to use the deep fry method, the turkey must be completely thawed before frying.

The cooking should occur outside and away from flammable objects.

Other tips the state recommends include remaining in the kitchen at all times while cooking, using a timer when boiling or simmering, and making sure your smoke detectors are working.
