WASHINGTON, D.C. (Newsource) – Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is taking a step toward codifying marriage equality.

He set up a procedural vote for a same-sex marriage bill for Wednesday.

Schumer called on his Republican colleagues to get the legislation passed.

“No Americans should ever, ever be discriminated against because of who they love,” said Schumer. “And passing this bill would secure much needed safeguards into federal law.”

“I hope, for the sake of tens of millions of Americans that at least 10 Republicans will vote with us to protect marriage equality into law soon,” continued Schumer. “The rights and dignity of millions of Americans depend on it.”

So far, it appears the bi-partisan group working on the legislation have the votes needed to get it passed.
