NEW YORK, NY (Newsource) – Hundreds of women are suing the State of New York. They say they were sexually assaulted while in custody at state prisons.
Some of the allegations go back to the 1980s. The woman are suing under the Adult Survivors Act, which allows civil suits even after the statute of limitations has past.
The act takes effect next week, on Thanksgiving.
Meanwhile, the Department of Corrections and Community Supervision said it has zero tolerance for sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and unauthorized relationships.
The Department said individuals who violate it’s rules are disciplined, and when there is evidence of a crime, referred for criminal prosecution.
