ALBANY, NY (WNY News Now) – New York State has officially issued its first cannabis dispensary licenses.

The licenses were approved by the state’s Cannabis Control Board on Monday. This is the first 36 of the 175 licenses to sell recreational marijuana in the state.

A court ruling earlier this month delayed the board from approving dispensaries in some parts of the state, including areas upstate, amid a legal dispute over licensing criteria.

New York legalized recreational use of marijuana in March 2021 but is still in the process of licensing people to sell it.

Some of the dispensaries selected this week are expected to open by the end of the year.
