
LILY DALE, NY (WNY News Now) – A local sports icon has died following a car crash this week.
New York State Police responded to a one vehicle collision on Glasgow Road in the Town of Pomfret Monday morning.
Investigators determined that the vehicle, operated by 76-year-old and local sports icon Donald Reinhoudt of Lily Dale, was traveling north on Glasgow Road when it exited the west shoulder of the roadway striking a tree.
He later succumbed to the injuries, passing away at Brooks Memorial Hospital later that day.
Reinhoudt was known as a local sports icon for the title of the world’s strongest man.
He won the title in 1979 in the CBS World’s Strongest Man Contest in Los Angeles after finishing second the previous year.
Reinhoudt set world records in the 8,000-pound trolley pull, 10,000-pound trolley pull, 20,000-pound Mack truck pull, 3,000- pound barrel press and 1,000-pound girl lift. Earning him a place in the Guiness Book of World Records.
Don Reinhoudt was inducted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame in 2005 and the Chautauqua Sports Hall of Fame in 1983.
