DUNKIRK, NY (WNY News Now) – The City of Dunkirk is gearing up for their 30th National Night Out event. Many communities over the years have ended their Night Out program, Dunkirk assures those looking forward to celebrating that their program is still going strong.

The continuation of the program directly correlates to the coordinators, the Police Department, Fire Department, and citizens all working together to promote safety.

The department explains that the Night Out program is designed to spread the message of safety and strength throughout the community, while simultaneously showing criminals that the city is “not afraid to fight back”.

The National Night Out will take place on August 1st, when citizens lock their doors, turn on their lights, and spend the night celebrating with their neighbors and community officials in Washington Park.

Officials are seeking volunteers to assist with the event and ask anyone interested to arrive at the park early to sign up.

The Dunkirk Police department will be at Washington park during the event with patrol cars and items for children in attendance, as well as ‘McGruff the Crime Dog’ making an appearance. The goal of the event is to promote transparency between officials and the public, in addition to building strong relationships with the community.
