JAMESTOWN, NY (WNY News Now) – Field and Fork Network has once again been included in the New York State budget, which in turn will help expand the Double Up Food Bucks program.
The program gives those receiving SNAP benefits the opportunity to not only purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, but also receive coupons for every dollar they spend to go towards more produce.
“As the ranking member of the Senate Agriculture Committee, I know how critically important it is not only for our farmers but for those folks that want to make sure they get good nutrition as part of their daily lives and the Double Up Food Bucks program I really embraced because I know how it will help people, it magnifies their buying power and as we all know, right now we have inflation, food prices are on the rise, and Double Up Food Bucks allows folks that are getting SNAP benefits, specifically our seniors, the ability to have more buying power,” said Senator George Borello.
The Senator recognizes the importance of eating healthy and supporting local farms.
“It’s about being able to bring fresh produce, locally grown foods to those who could use it and right here is a perfect example. The folks that live in this area that otherwise might not have access to fresh produce can thanks to the efforts of the mobile market, the Jamestown Public Market, and of course Field and Fork Network,” said Senator Borello. “This mobile market, they showed up, they opened the back of that truck and within like 10 minutes, boom, we had a farmer’s market. What an amazing thing that that is.”
In the end, Senator Borello is very grateful to those who support the program.
“We’ve been at farmer’s markets in Batavia, Jamestown, up in Dunkirk, and more to come. I represent five counties in the 57th Senate District and Field and Fork is really hitting all of them so thank you so much for all you’re doing and I just want to say thank you very much also to the governor and everyone else that has been supporting the funding of the Double Up Food Bucks program, so thank you again,” Senator Borello said.
The Jamestown Mobile Market will be making weekly appearances at the Silvertree Senior Center, as well as several other locations throughout the Pearl City. For more information, you can visit their Facebook page.
