Jamestown, NY (WNY News Now) – The highly anticipated Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament kicked off today in Jamestown after a hiatus of several years, drawing players of all ages for a weekend of intense competition and community spirit.

The streets of Jamestown came alive today as the long-awaited Gus Macker 3-on-3 basketball tournament returned to the city. The event which was last held several years ago, commenced today and will continue through tomorrow, Sunday, August 20.

Organized by Patrick Smeraldo, this year’s tournament carries a fresh approach with a focus on creating a vibrant festival atmosphere that caters to participants of all ages. Notably, the event emphasizes inclusivity for children across the region. Smeraldo expressed excitement about the event’s evolution, stating, “They’ve made it much much more kid originated.” Among the innovations are the Macker Mites division, specially designed for children aged eight and under, featuring lower baskets set at eight feet. Additionally, a unified division has been introduced, providing students with disabilities the opportunity to participate and compete.

The heart of Jamestown was transformed as Brooklyn Square’s streets were closed off to accommodate the basketball courts for the tournament. Players, hailing from various age groups, showcased their skills and determination to claim supremacy in their respective brackets. The first day of the tournament saw a seamless reintegration of the event into the community, with the streets bustling once again with the excitement of competitive basketball.

With divisions established for different skill levels, each team strives not only for the coveted championship trophy but also for a year’s worth of bragging rights.
