JAMESTOWN, NY (WNY News Now) – A beloved program run by the Jamestown Prendergast Library has come to an end and is now gearing up for a finale waffle party.
The Summer Reading Celebration closed the book on August 19th, but the library continues to host ‘community days’ in the meantime while last minute preparations for the finale party are underway.
“Every Wednesday throughout this summer during our Summer Reading Celebration we’ve had community days, so we’ve had our story time outside from about 10:30 to 11:00 a.m, and then from there we have playtime for the kiddos as well as our YMCA lunches,” said library staff Hannah Dewey.
The Jamestown YMCA teamed up with the Prendergast Library during the Summer Reading Celebration to provide the young readers with a free meal.
“So the YMCA did a grant program and we are one of their sites for lunches this year. From 11:00 a.m to 1:00 p.m children under the age of 18 can come and get a free lunch, it does have to be consumed on site but they are welcome to sit outside at our tables or if it’s raining pretty bad we’ll take it inside,” said Dewey.
During the celebration, there were many other events to pique the kiddos’ interest.
“We just had Hope, the police’s therapy dog, we had the Audubon, and one other organization last week, but we have guest speakers and presenters throughout the summer on Wednesdays just to kind of get more community involvement,” Dewey said.
Staff at the Prendergast Library are excited to host the waffle party and announce the grand prize winners of the reading celebration this weekend.
“August 26th, which I think is a Saturday, is going to be our waffle party, so we’re going to give out our Summer Reading Celebration prizes, we’re going to have a waffle bar for everybody with lots of different toppings and it’s going to be a lot of fun,” Dewey said.
Along with the waffle bar and prizes, kids and teens will have access to free books provided through a grant from Cummins.
