Cheektowaga Man Sentenced to 8 Years for Confining Victim, Girlfriend Faces 25-Year Term

(WNY News Now) – A Cheektowaga man receives an 8-year prison term after coercing victim’s confinement in home, along with girlfriend. His girlfriend is to be sentenced separately.

Buffalo – Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn revealed that James K. McGonnell, 43, of Cheektowaga, was sentenced to 8 years in prison by State Supreme Court Justice Deborah A. Haendiges. The sentencing follows McGonnell’s and his girlfriend Carol Steinagle’s guilty plea in the Kidnapping in the Second Degree case.


Between November 2017 and January 2020, the duo forced the victim to stay in a bedroom or garage, withholding basic necessities and issuing threats. Steinagle faces a potential 25-year sentence. Justice Haendiges also enacted a protective order till 2041 to safeguard the victim’s identity.
