Washington D.C. – In a bipartisan effort, Senators Gillibrand, Capito, and Sinema have introduced a bill to bestow the Congressional Gold Medal upon Billie Jean King, marking a milestone in American sports history. King, renowned for her contributions to gender equality, played a pivotal role in securing equal prize money for both male and female tennis players at the U.S. Open. She also spearheaded the establishment of the Women’s Tennis Association, advocating for pay parity throughout her illustrious career.
On the 50th anniversary of her legendary “Battle of the Sexes” match against Bobby Riggs, this recognition is particularly poignant. Representative Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and Mikie Sherrill (D-NJ) lead the House counterpart of the bill, boasting more than 80 co-sponsors.
Senator Gillibrand expressed her admiration for King’s tireless efforts, highlighting that no individual woman athlete has ever received the Congressional Gold Medal. Senator Capito echoed this sentiment, underscoring King’s unparalleled impact on women in sports.
The legislation has gained endorsement from the United States Tennis Association, solidifying its significance in acknowledging Billie Jean King’s remarkable legacy. If passed, King will join an esteemed list of athletes celebrated for their exceptional contributions to society.
