Olean – In the early hours of October 3, 2023, at approximately 2:41 am, the Olean Fire Department received a call and swiftly dispatched units to 629 South Union Street, responding to a car that had crashed into a residential building. The vehicle, which was traveling southbound out of the city, veered off the roadway, striking the home.
Upon arrival, Olean Fire Department personnel discovered the vehicle lodged inside the living room of the residence, resulting in extensive structural damage. A 15-year-old male occupant, who was asleep on a couch in the living room at the time of the accident, sustained multiple injuries and was subsequently transported to a medical facility via ambulance. Fortunately, the driver of the vehicle managed to self-extricate and did not suffer any significant injuries.
Due to the extensive damage to the home, the officer in charge requested the assistance of code enforcement and the Fire Department Technical Rescue Team. Following their assessment, the residence was deemed uninhabitable, necessitating an emergency demolition. The demolition was successfully carried out and completed by 9 am on the same morning.
In light of the incident, Believers Chapel was summoned to provide support to the more than 6 displaced residents from the damaged home. Initially, the Port Allegany Fire Department’s structural collapse team was also requested, but the request was later canceled due to the impending demolition.
