(WNY News Now) – A high-speed police pursuit of a reported stolen vehicle in Syracuse early Thursday morning ended tragically as the pursued vehicle crashed, resulting in the death of the 15-year-old driver.
Syracuse, N.Y. – On the morning of Thursday, November 30th, 2023, around 3:25 A.M., officers on routine patrol in the vicinity of S. Salina Street and W. Onondaga Street identified a vehicle reported as stolen. Attempting to intercept the vehicle at Clinton Street and W. Onondaga Street, officers initiated a stop, but the driver, identified as Zy’Mier Zulueta, aged 15 and the sole occupant, evaded the authorities, leading to a pursuit spanning several blocks.
The pursuit concluded abruptly when the stolen vehicle crashed into a wall at the intersection of Seymour Street and S. Wilbur Avenue. Responding officers approached the wrecked vehicle and found Zulueta unresponsive. Despite immediate attempts at life-saving care, the young driver was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Syracuse Police Department’s Traffic Section took charge of the crash investigation, as per standard procedure. In adherence to department protocol and state law, the New York State Attorney General’s Office was promptly notified and is actively participating in the ongoing investigation.
In response to the incident, the 600-700 block of Seymour Street and the 700-800 block of S. Wilbur Avenue were temporarily closed to facilitate the thorough processing of the scene by investigators. The closure was necessary to gather evidence and assess the circumstances surrounding the crash.
