(WNY News Now) – Chautauqua County, NY – A Chautauqua County resident has pleaded guilty and paid fines totaling $575 for illegally burning garbage on his property, following a complaint about noxious smoke in September.
On November 15, in the Town of Hanover Justice Court, an individual admitted guilt and settled fines and surcharges amounting to $575 in connection with an incident involving the illegal burning of household waste. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Officer Damrath responded to a complaint about thick smoke emitting a foul odor from the individual’s property in September. Upon arrival, Officer Damrath discovered a sizable fire containing household garbage, plastics, insulation, and a mattress in the subject’s backyard. The individual claimed to be cleaning out his barn, prompting the DEC’s intervention.
