(WNY News Now) – A significant development has occurred in the Karon Works homicide case as a 16-year-old male suspect has been charged in connection with the tragic incident that took place on December 12, 2023.
On the evening of December 12, 2023, Syracuse Police responded to multiple Shot Spotter activations and 911 calls reporting shots fired near 107 Cheney Street. Upon arrival, officers found 15-year-old Karon Works suffering from multiple gunshot wounds near Lower Onondaga Park. Despite immediate first aid and extensive efforts by medical staff at University Hospital, Works succumbed to his injuries.
The subsequent investigation by CID Homicide Unit Detectives involved interviews, citywide canvassing, and search warrants, leading to the identification of the 16-year-old male suspect. On January 26, 2024, the suspect, already in custody on unrelated charges, was officially charged, arraigned, and remains detained at Hillbrook Juvenile Detention Center.
Charges include Murder in the Second Degree (Penal Law 125.25) and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree (Penal Law 265.03). The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is urged to contact CID.
