(WNY News Now) – FREDONIA – The Cinema Series at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center continues with the movie adaptation of the Broadway musical “The Color Purple.” It will be screened on Sat., Feb. 10, and Tues., Feb. 13, at 7:30 p.m.

A story of love and resilience, “The Color Purple” is a decades-spanning tale of one woman’s journey to independence. Celie faces many hardships in her life, but ultimately finds extraordinary strength and hope in the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood.

TIME magazine calls the film “lively and fun, without betraying the heavy undertones of some of its subject matter. It’s a reclamation, but a buoyant rather than somber one.” Slate magazine calls it “entertaining and deeply heartfelt (I had a face full of tears by the end), with awards-worthy acting and singing (and, yes, dancing).” The Chicago Reader calls it “a joyous crowd-pleasing odyssey, made to feel fresh with the help of a pitch-perfect cast.” Rated PG-13 for mature thematic content, language, sexual content and violence, “The Color Purple” runs two hours, 21 minutes.

Tickets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. The Opera House is equipped with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or staff member.

The Opera House Cinema Series is generously sponsored by Lake Shore Savings Bank. In addition, Opera House programming is made possible by the United Arts Appeal of Chautauqua County.

The 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center is a member-supported not-for-profit performing arts center with a mission to “present the performing arts for the benefit of our community and region … providing access to artistic diversity … and high quality programming at an affordable price.” It is located in Village Hall in downtown Fredonia.
