(WNY News Now) – Albany, NY – Governor Kathy Hochul announces extended free snowmobiling weekends, March 1-3 and March 8-10, inviting out-of-state and Canadian snowmobilers to explore New York State’s extensive trail network.

As Western New York experiences unexpectedly warm temperatures, Governor Kathy Hochul has declared two additional free snowmobiling weekends, aiming to boost tourism and celebrate New York’s commitment to the snowmobiling industry. The events, scheduled for March 1-3 and March 8-10, 2024, waive registration requirements for properly insured out-of-state snowmobilers.

Participants must operate snowmobiles registered in their home state or province, carrying the necessary insurance. Outside of these weekends, registration with New York State is mandatory. The initiative, covering 10,500 miles of trails, aligns with the state’s dedication to snowmobile trail maintenance, funded by registration fees supporting local economies.

While Western New York may not fully benefit from the promotion, the New York State Parks advise enthusiasts across the state to prioritize safety. Historically, excessive speed and operator intoxication contribute to snowmobile injuries. Safety recommendations include proper inspection and maintenance, wearing DOT-certified helmets and appropriate gear, riding with companions, adhering to marked trails, avoiding alcohol or drugs, and exercising caution on frozen bodies of water.

For real-time trail conditions, area snowmobile clubs’ websites provide updates. The New York State Snowmobile Association and New York State Parks’ websites offer valuable information on safe riding practices and trail networks.

Additionally, the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has implemented speed limits on the Adirondack Rail Trail, emphasizing a 15 mph restriction in Saranac Lake and Lake Clear. DEC’s website provides further details on the Adirondack Rail Trail and snowmobiling on Forest Preserve lands.

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) reminds snowmobilers of the annual registration renewal, costing $100 or $45 for club members. Non-New Yorkers seeking temporary registration can use the NYS Registration for Out-of-State Snowmobile service for a 15-day permit.

For more information on snowmobiling, visit parks.ny.gov, while the DMV’s website offers online renewal options, mail-in, or in-person services at DMV offices.
