(WNY News Now) – Town of Pomfret – The Chautauqua County Health Department, representing the Village of Fredonia, has mandated a boil water advisory for all Fredonia water customers, encompassing residents in the Town of Pomfret as well, due to increased turbidity levels in the water supply.
In response to the scheduled maintenance of the water treatment plant’s tank, the Village of Fredonia faces concerns over water safety. Elevated levels of turbidity detected in the distribution system have prompted the issuance of a precautionary boil water order. The presence of heightened turbidity suggests potential contamination by harmful microbes, necessitating precautionary measures to ensure public health.
Effective immediately and until further notice, all Fredonia water customers are required to boil water intended for consumption purposes. This includes drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth, and preparing coffee. The boiling process, wherein water is brought to a rolling boil for one minute and then cooled prior to use, effectively eliminates any bacteria or microbes present.
Additionally, hand-washed dishes should be rinsed with boiled or bottled water and allowed to air dry completely. However, dishwashers equipped with a full dry cycle and reaching a temperature of 170⁰F may not necessitate boiled or bottled water. While the water remains safe for laundry and bathing purposes, it is imperative that it not be ingested.
